From the beginning of time, every generation, culture, and religion has wrestled with the same haunting question: What happens when we die? We wrestle because death seems final, yet deep down, each of us knows that life cannot simply end with our last breath.
The Bible offers not just answers about life after death; it gives us real hope, a promise of resurrection! It tells of a time when Jesus Christ will return to Earth—not as the humble carpenter of Nazareth, but as the glorious King of Kings. His return, known as the Second Coming, will bring an end to war and injustice. It will separate light from darkness, life from destruction, and truth from deception.
- But when will the Second Coming take place—are there signs?
- And according to the Bible, what will happen to the dead on that day—both those who believed in Jesus and those who did not?
- What is the mysterious “Millennium” described in the Bible—and what will happen after it?
- The Bible also speaks of a first resurrection, a second resurrection, a first death, and a second death—what are those?
This seems like a lot to cover, but when you walk through the Bible step by step, you’ll find simple truths about these events that don’t instill fear but actually bring clarity, comfort, and direction. Whether you are a believer or a seeker, you’ll discover that God’s plan for humanity is both just and deeply loving. He freely offers you hope that transcends death.
An Overview of the First and Second Resurrections
The Bible teaches that there are two main resurrections—one for the righteous and one for the wicked.
- The first resurrection will take place at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, when dead believers will rise to eternal life with their Savior.
- After a 1,000-year period called the “Millennium,” the second resurrection will take place.
- At the second resurrection, dead unbelievers will rise to face judgment and truth. The Bible says they will die the second death: eternal separation from God, eternal nothingness, eternal death in the most literal sense.
Understanding Death According to the Bible
To understand what the Bible says about the Second Coming, the Millennium, and everything that happens after, we must first understand what the Bible says about death.
Death Is a Sleep
Scripture often refers to death as sleep—a temporary state that will end in awakening. Even Jesus said:
“Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up” (John 11:11).
However, death does not lead to eternal consciousness. According to the Bible, death is an unconscious rest until the resurrection.
“For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5)
Every human being (except believers living at the time of the Second Coming) experiences this first death, this natural but impermanent end of mortal life. However, the Bible promises resurrection for all, followed by eternal life for believers and eternal death (the second death) for unbelievers. The second death is an event that will eradicate sin and its consequences forever (more on that later). But 1,000 years before that day, the glorious day of Jesus’ Second Coming will arrive!
Understanding the Second Coming of Jesus Christ
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is the central hope of Christianity. Just as He came once to save the world through His death and resurrection, He will come again to complete salvation and destroy the reign of evil. We can live with confidence and hope in this future event.
Jesus Promised His Return
Before dying on the cross, Jesus comforted His disciples with these words:
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:1–3)
His promise applies to us, too. One day, those who love Jesus will be reunited with Him forever!
The Nature of His Coming
The Bible is very clear: The return of Christ will not be secret, symbolic, or hidden. It will be visible, audible, and world shaking.
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. . . . ” (1 Thessalonians 4:16)
“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him . . . ” (Revelation 1:7)
The Second Coming will not be something you read about in the news. It will be the news, the only news! Every person alive will witness it. (And according to the Bible, dead believers will awaken to witness it as well!)
What Are the Signs of the Second Coming?
In a world filled with war, natural disasters, moral confusion, and spiritual hunger, many sense that something tremendous is about to happen. Could what they’re feeling be true? Could these signs of a collapsing Earth be signs of the Second Coming?
About His return, Jesus Himself said there would be unmistakable signs—warnings and reminders that history is reaching its climax.
Chaos Across the Globe
Jesus described global chaos that would intensify before His coming:
“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. . . . For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” (Matthew 24:6–7)
Today, the world is filled with tension—wars, pandemics, economic turmoil, and natural disasters on an unprecedented scale. While these alone don’t prove that the end is here, they do fulfill what Jesus said: the world will groan in birth pangs before His return (Romans 8:22).
Moral and Spiritual Decay
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power . . . ” (2 Timothy 3:1–4)
Society increasingly calls evil good and good evil. Truth is replaced by opinion and holiness by self-centeredness. Yet amid this darkness, the light of the Gospel still shines.
The Gospel Preached to the Whole World
Jesus also shared this beautiful sign that must happen before His Second Coming:
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)
Before Christ returns, the message of salvation will reach every corner of Earth—an incredible sign of God’s mercy and desire that all be saved (1 Timothy 2:3–4).
Understanding the First and Second Resurrections
The First Resurrection – The Resurrection of Life
At the world-shaking Second Coming of Jesus Christ:
“ . . . The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)
This resurrection includes all who died trusting in Jesus Christ, from the earliest believers to the most recent faithful followers. They will be raised to immortality, forever free from sin, pain, and death. Together, the resurrected and living believers will be transformed.
“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” (1 Corinthians 15:51–52)
The redeemed will all “meet the Lord in the air” to go with Him to heaven. They will not experience the second death discussed in the Bible and detailed in Revelation 20.
“Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power.” (Revelation 20:6a)
The Second Resurrection – The Resurrection of Judgment
The Bible explains that after a thousand years (the Millennium), another resurrection occurs:
“But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished.” (Revelation 20:5)
This resurrection is for those who rejected Christ or lived in rebellion against God. It is a resurrection to judgment, leading to the second death.
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt.” (Daniel 12:2)
During the Millennium: Renewal and Judgment
The Millennium begins with the Second Coming and the first resurrection, when the righteous are taken to heaven and the wicked are destroyed by the brightness of Christ’s coming (Zephaniah 1:2–3; 2 Thessalonians 2:8).
The earth becomes desolate—a “bottomless pit” (abyssos in Greek), as described in Revelation 20:1–3. Satan and his fallen angels are bound, unable to deceive anyone because no living humans remain on Earth.
Meanwhile, the redeemed are in heaven, spending time with God and participating in the judgment:
“And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. . . . And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:4)
During this time, God places His justice and mercy on full display before His people as they review the lives of those who rejected Him and understand His righteous judgments. All their questions will be answered.
The End of the Millennium: The Second Death
The Bible says that the New Jerusalem, the capital of God’s eternal kingdom, will descend from heaven to Earth at the end of the Millennium (Revelation 21:2). The wicked will be resurrected (the second resurrection), and Satan will gather them for one last rebellion against God (Revelation 20:7–9).
But then comes the final judgment. Fire comes down from heaven and forever destroys sin and all who rejected God’s redeeming grace.
“Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:14–15)
This event marks the eternal end of evil, death, and suffering.
After the Millenium: The New Earth
After describing the final judgment, the Bible paints an unimaginably beautiful picture of what happens to the righteous after the Millennium:
“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.” (Revelation 21:1a)
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)
The Second Coming, the first resurrection, the Millennium, the second resurrection, and the second death have passed. The redeemed inherit the New Earth, a restored paradise where God dwells among His people. Sin will never rise again. Fear is extinct. Death is no more. All that remains is eternal joy, peace, and purpose in the presence of our infinitely powerful, knowledgeable, and loving Savior.
This future is not a fantasy. It is God’s promise.
Will People Who Died Without Knowing Jesus Suffer the Second Death?
The Bible describes the last judgment and second death as final and irreversible, leading many to ask: Will God condemn those who died without ever hearing about Jesus to eternal death?
The Bible reveals that God is perfectly just and loving; no one will be lost unfairly.
“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.” (Psalm 103:8)
“The Lord is . . . longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)
God judges every person based on the light and truth they received. Those who never had the chance to know Jesus personally will be judged fairly—by how they responded to the truth they did know (Romans 2:14–16).
But those who knowingly reject God’s grace and refuse His free gift of salvation will face the second death—not because God is cruel, but because He honors human choice. He desires to save everyone through Jesus Christ. He wants to spend eternal life with each and every human! But He will never force that decision.
Living Today in Light of the First and Second Resurrections
The Bible’s messages about the signs of the Second Coming, the eternal life given to those who experience the first resurrection, and the eternal death destined for those who experience the second resurrection are not meant to create fear. They are meant to foster faith, to show us the perfect character of God and teach us how to live with purpose and peace in a world full of uncertainty. We do that by:
Waking Up Spiritually
The Bible warns us not to sleep in sin.
“Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.” (1 Thessalonians 5:6)
We should be alert to the signs of Christ’s Second Coming and live each day ready to meet Him.
Choosing Eternal Life Today
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Eternal life is not something we can earn. Instead, it is a gift offered freely through Jesus Christ. To accept it, we must repent of sin, believe in Him, and walk in His love.
Trusting God’s Justice and Mercy
If you’ve lost someone who didn’t know Jesus, remember: God alone knows their heart. His justice is perfect, and His mercy is infinite. You can trust Him with the souls of those you love.
You Can Take Part in the Millennium and Everything That Happens After!
The story of human history does not end with despair, as some believe. It ends with victory! Injustice, death, and hell will all be defeated.
“The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.” (1 Corinthians 15:26)
When Christ returns, there will be only two groups: those rejoicing at His appearing and those mourning because they never accepted Him. The dead in Christ will rise in the first resurrection. The living who rejected Him will die, and all of the lost will await the second resurrection and second death.
Friend, you were created for eternal life, not eternal death. You get to choose which group you will join. You get to choose, no matter your past, forgiveness and hope in Your Savior who died for you and rose again. You get to choose peace, knowing that even if you die, you will rise to glory! You get to choose belief in the Second Coming—it is more than a prophecy; it is a promise of love, an assurance that this broken world will not last forever.
Starting now, you can have eternal life!
“I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2, NIV)
