Grace Alone: The Gift We Could Never Earn

Grace Alone: The Gift We Could Never Earn

Today we’re exploring one of the most beautiful and liberating truths in all of Scripture:

That salvation is entirely a gift of God’s grace—unearned, undeserved, and freely given through Jesus Christ.

From Genesis to Revelation, and through the reflections of voices like Ellen G. White and Walter Brueggemann, we’ll see a consistent message:

Humanity has done nothing to earn salvation—yet God has given everything to secure it.

Let’s walk through this together.

🌿 Segment 1: Understanding Grace

The Bible defines grace as unmerited favor—God giving us what we do not deserve.

Ephesians 2:8–9 tells us:

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Grace is not:

  • A reward for effort
  • A response to goodness
  • A result of religious performance

It is a gift.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“There is nothing in us from which we can claim salvation; our only ground of hope is in the righteousness of Christ.”

Already, we see the foundation: salvation begins with God, not us.

🌿 Segment 2: Humanity’s True Condition

Scripture is honest about the human condition.

Romans 3:23 says:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

And Romans 5:10 goes even deeper:

“For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son…”

Notice that word: enemies.

We were not climbing toward God—we were separated from Him.

Walter Brueggemann often emphasizes that the story of Israel in the Old Testament is not one of steady faithfulness, but repeated failure. Again and again, God’s people break covenant.

And yet—God remains faithful.

This tells us something profound:
The problem is not just what we do—it is what we are unable to do.

We cannot save ourselves.

🌿 Segment 3: God Moves First

The gospel is not about humanity reaching up to God—it is about God reaching down to humanity.

Romans 5:8 declares:

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

And 1 Peter 1:3 reminds us:

“In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Salvation began in the heart of God:

  • His love
  • His mercy
  • His initiative

Walter Brueggemann describes this as God’s covenant faithfulness—a God who continues to choose His people, not because they are worthy, but because He is faithful. Its not our faith, but the faith of Jesus.

🌿 Segment 4: Christ—Our Righteousness

At the center of the gospel is not a principle, but a Person: Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:30 says:

“It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”

This is critical.

Jesus does not merely help us become righteous—
He is our righteousness.

Ellen G. White captures this beautifully:

“Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves.”

This is often called the great exchange:

  • Our sin placed on Christ
  • His righteousness given to us

Not earned. Freely given.

🌿 Segment 5: The Old Testament—Grace Before Law

Sometimes people think grace begins in the New Testament—but that’s not true.

In Exodus 20:2, before giving the Ten Commandments, God says:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt…”

Deliverance comes before instruction.

Walter Brueggemann emphasizes that Israel’s identity is grounded in God’s saving action—not their obedience.

The order matters:

  1. God saves, In Christ.
  2. Then God calls His children into faithful service.

Never the other way around.

🌿 Segment 6: The Law Reveals—Grace Saves

Romans 3:20 tells us:

“Through the law we become conscious of our sin.”

The law is like a mirror, it is our “schoolmaster”:

  • It shows us our need
  • The law cannot cleanse us

Ellen G. White explains that only Christ and His precious blood can do the cleansing. Like in the sanctuary service and during Passover.

This protects us from a common misunderstanding:
We do not obey to be saved—
we obey because we are saved by the incarnation, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. Dwelling “In Christ”, Christ’s character becomes our character. New you, new me, in Christ.

🌿 Segment 7: New Birth Comes from Mercy

1 Peter 1:3 again reminds us:

“In His great mercy He has given us new birth…”

And Titus 3:5 says:

“He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy.”

Salvation is not self-improvement—it is new creation.

Ellen G. White wrote:

“The heart must be renewed by divine grace; otherwise it cannot seek for purity.”

Even our desire for God is a gift.

🌿 Segment 8: Grace Produces a New Life

Ephesians 2:10 tells us:

“We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…”

Works are not the root of salvation—they are the fruit.

Walter Brueggemann would describe this as covenant response:
A life shaped by gratitude, not fear.

🌿 Segment 9: The Cross—The Final Word

At the cross, Jesus cried:

“It is finished.” (John 19:30)

If salvation could be earned:

  • The cross would not be necessary

But because we could not save ourselves:

  • Christ did it all

The cross declares:
Nothing more needs to be added.

🌿 Closing Reflection

We see a unified message:

  • We were lost
  • God acted first
  • Christ accomplished everything
  • Salvation is a gift of grace

Romans 11:36 says:

“For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.”

🎧 Final Invitation

Wondering where you stand with God, hear this clearly:

You are not invited to earn salvation.
You are invited to receive it.

To rest in what Christ has already done.
To trust in His righteousness.
To live in His grace.

Until next time—may you walk in the freedom, peace, and assurance of the grace, the full and complete work of Jesus Christ.
