From Pentecost to the Latter Rain: Preparing the Heart for the Final Outpouring
Welcome, friends. Today we’re stepping into one of the most profound and transformative themes in all of Scripture—the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We’ll journey back 2,000 years to the day of Pentecost, often called the “early rain,” and then move forward to understand what the Bible—and the writings of Ellen G. White—teach about the “latter rain,” the final outpouring of the Spirit before Christ’s return.
Our goal is not just to understand history—but to answer a deeply personal question:
How can modern believers receive the latter rain?
Part 1: The Promise of the Spirit
Before Pentecost ever happened, it was promised.
Jesus, speaking to His disciples, said in Acts 1:4–5:
“Wait for the promise of the Father… for John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”
And in Acts 1:8:
“Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me…”
This promise is rooted deeply in the Old Testament. The prophet Joel declared:
“I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh” (Joel 2:28).
This prophecy finds its first fulfillment at Pentecost—and its final, greater fulfillment in the last days.
Part 2: What Happened at Pentecost (The Early Rain)
Let’s go to Acts chapter 2.
The disciples were gathered together:
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place” (Acts 2:1).
Suddenly:
- A sound like a rushing mighty wind
- Tongues of fire
- The disciples filled with the Holy Spirit
They began to speak in other languages, proclaiming the gospel with power.
What Made Pentecost Possible?
The outpouring of the Spirit was not random—it followed a specific spiritual preparation.
1. Unity of Heart
Acts 1:14 says:
“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.”
They were no longer arguing about who would be greatest. Pride had been laid aside.
2. Confession and Repentance
Ellen G. White writes in The Acts of the Apostles:
“Putting away all differences, all desire for the supremacy, they came close together in Christian fellowship.”
They confessed faults, reconciled relationships, and humbled their hearts.
3. Earnest Prayer
They didn’t just wait—they prayed intensely.
“They were continually seeking God for the gift of the Spirit.”
4. Focus on Christ, Not Self
Their attention shifted from themselves to:
- The life of Christ
- The mission of Christ
- The righteousness of Christ
Result: Power for Mission
Peter, who once denied Christ, now boldly preached:
“Repent, and be baptized… and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38).
Three thousand souls were converted in a single day.
This is the early rain—a spiritual outpouring that empowered the gospel to go to the world.
Part 3: The Meaning of “Early Rain” and “Latter Rain”
In biblical agriculture, especially in Israel:
- The early rain prepared the soil for planting
- The latter rain ripened the harvest
This imagery is used spiritually in Scripture:
James 5:7:
“Be patient… until he receive the early and latter rain.”
Spiritual Meaning
- Early Rain (Pentecost):
- Beginning of the gospel work
- Empowerment of the early church
- Latter Rain:
- Final outpouring before Christ returns
- Ripening of the spiritual harvest
- Loud cry of the gospel to all nations
Part 4: The Latter Rain in Bible Prophecy
The Bible teaches that the last days will see a powerful revival.
Revelation 18:1:
“The earth was lightened with his glory.”
This describes a global movement—God’s truth going to the entire world with unprecedented power.
Joel’s Dual Fulfillment
Joel 2:28–29 applies both to:
- Pentecost
- The last days
Peter confirms this in Acts 2:
“This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel…”
But the full fulfillment is still future.
Part 5: Ellen White on the Latter Rain
Ellen G. White provides deep insight into this final outpouring.
In Testimonies to Ministers, she writes:
“The latter rain… will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement.”
Notice the condition:
purified hearts
She also warns:
“Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them.”
This is not about perfection through human effort—but about complete surrender to Christ.
Part 6: Why Many Will Not Receive the Latter Rain
This is a sobering reality.
Ellen G. White writes:
“Many have in a great measure failed to receive the former rain. They have not obtained all the benefits that God has thus provided for them.”
In other words:
- If we neglect the daily work of the Spirit now
- We will not be prepared for the final outpouring
Common Barriers
1. Spiritual Lukewarmness
Revelation 3:16:
“Because thou art lukewarm… I will spue thee out of my mouth.”
2. Unconfessed Sin
Sin blocks the Spirit’s work in the heart.
3. Pride and Self-Sufficiency
The Spirit fills empty vessels—not self-satisfied ones.
4. Neglect of Prayer
Pentecost was preceded by intense prayer—this will not change.
Part 7: How to Receive the Latter Rain
Now we come to the most important question.
What can you do?
1. Daily Surrender to Christ
Luke 9:23:
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily…”
The latter rain is not a one-time emotional event—it is the result of a life surrendered daily.
2. Heart Searching and Repentance
Psalm 139:23–24:
“Search me, O God… and see if there be any wicked way in me…”
This involves:
- Honest self-examination
- Confession
- Turning away from sin
3. Unity with Other Believers
Pentecost came when they were “of one accord.”
That means:
- Forgiveness
- Reconciliation
- Humility
Division grieves the Spirit.
4. Earnest, Persistent Prayer
Zechariah 10:1:
“Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain…”
This is powerful:
- We are commanded to ask for it
Not casually—but earnestly.
5. Study of God’s Word
The Spirit works through truth.
John 17:17:
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
A neglected Bible leads to a weakened spiritual life.
6. Active Witnessing
The Spirit is given for mission.
If we are not sharing:
- We are not positioned to receive greater power
7. Faith in God’s Promise
Luke 11:13:
“How much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”
God is more willing to give the Spirit than we are to receive it.
Part 8: The Final Movement
The latter rain will not be quiet or hidden.
Revelation describes a global proclamation:
- Every nation
- Every language
- Every people
This is sometimes called the “loud cry.”
What It Will Look Like
According to Scripture and the writings of Ellen G. White:
- Powerful preaching of truth
- Deep conviction of sin
- Rapid conversion of many souls
- Clear separation between truth and error
Part 9: The Heart of the Matter
At its core, the latter rain is not about:
- Power
- Miracles
- Emotional experiences
It is about:
- Christ fully formed in the believer
Galatians 4:19:
“Until Christ be formed in you…”
Ellen G. White summarizes it beautifully:
“When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come…”
Final Appeal
So where does this leave us?
We are living in the time between:
- The early rain
- And the latter rain
The question is not:
“Will God send it?”
The question is:
“Will we be ready to receive it?”
A Simple Prayer
Let this be your daily prayer:
“Lord, prepare my heart.
Search me. Cleanse me.
Unite me with Your people.
Fill me with Your Spirit.
And use me in Your final work.”
Pentecost was not the end—it was the beginning.
The same Spirit that fell on that upper room is waiting to fall again—this time, not just on a small group, but on a people fully surrendered to Christ.
And the invitation is open.
Ask. Seek. Surrender. Receive.
The Latter Rain: More Than Power—A Work of Character
One of the most important clarifications made is this:
The latter rain is not primarily about miracles or visible manifestations—it is about the ripening of the spiritual harvest, which is the character of Christ in the believer.
In Testimonies to Ministers:
“The latter rain… ripens the grain for harvest.”
This directly connects with Christ’s words:
“The harvest is the end of the world” (Matthew 13:39).
👉 So the latter rain is about finishing the work of grace in the soul.
The Relationship Between the Early and Latter Rain
A major emphasis in her writings is this principle:
You cannot receive the latter rain if you have neglected the early rain.
It is written:
“Many have in a great measure failed to receive the former rain. They have not obtained all the benefits that God has thus provided for them.”
What does that mean?
The early rain represents:
- Daily conversion
- Growth in grace
- Ongoing surrender
The latter rain is not a substitute—it is a completion.
👉 In other words:
- The latter rain doesn’t create spirituality
- It perfects what has already been developing
A Solemn Warning: Many Will Expect It—but Not Receive It
This is one of the most sobering themes.
It is written:
“They are hoping that the season of refreshing will come… but they are making no effort to obtain it.”
And even more directly:
“They do not see their need.”
The Great Deception
Many will assume:
- “When the latter rain comes, I will be changed automatically.”
No not so.
The reality:
- The latter rain does not transform an unprepared heart
- It empowers an already surrendered life
🕊️ The Conditions for Receiving the Latter Rain
Let’s review the very specific conditions for receiving the Latter Rain. Carefully, for our future destiny depends upon it.
1. Victory Over Known Sin
“Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them.”
This is not teaching sinless perfection by human effort—but:
A life where:
- Sin is not cherished
- The will is fully surrendered
- Christ is allowed to cleanse and transform
2. Deep Heart Searching
This is not surface-level religion.
It is:
- Examination of motives
- Confession of hidden sins
- Removal of anything that separates from God
This echoes:
“Search me, O God…” (Psalm 139:23)
3. Unity Among Believers
Just like Pentecost:
“When the heart of the believers is softened and subdued… then the Holy Spirit will be poured out.”
Division, criticism, and self-exaltation are major barriers.
The latter rain falls on a people who are:
- Humble
- Forgiving
- United in Christ
4. Earnest, Prevailing Prayer
She describes a level of prayer that is far deeper than routine devotion:
“There must be earnest prayer… a wrestling with God.”
This mirrors:
- Jacob wrestling at Peniel
- The disciples in the upper room
5. Entire Dependence on Christ’s Righteousness
This is central.
The latter rain is connected to:
- The message of righteousness by faith
Not:
- Self-improvement
- Legalistic effort
But:
- Complete trust in Christ
The Latter Rain and the Loud Cry
The latter rain is consistently linked with the final proclamation of the gospel, often called the “loud cry” of Revelation 18.
“The work will be similar to that of the Day of Pentecost.”
But greater in scope:
- Global
- Final
- Urgent
What Will Happen
According to her writings:
- The message of truth will go with unusual power
- Many who have been undecided will take their stand
- Honest hearts will respond quickly
Who Will Give This Message?
This is striking:
“The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of His Spirit than by the training of literary institutions.”
Meaning:
- Not limited to clergy
- Not dependent on education
- All faithful followers of Jesus, the Priesthood of the Believers
But on:
- Surrender
- Spirit-filled lives
The Role of Trials and Crisis
Another overlooked theme:
The latter rain comes in connection with final crisis conditions
- God’s people will pass through deep testing
- This prepares them to receive the Spirit
Why?
Because:
- Trials strip away self-reliance
- They deepen dependence on God
- They refine character
A Profound Insight: The Latter Rain Cannot Be Manufactured
It is very clear that the Latter Rain:
- Cannot be produced by emotionalism
- Cannot be generated by human effort
- Cannot be scheduled or organized
It is:
- A sovereign act of the grace and mercy of God
- Given at the right time, which friends is NOW.
- To prepared hearts
The Danger of Counterfeits
We are warned that before the true latter rain:
- There will be false revivals
- Emotional excitement mistaken for the Spirit
- Miracles that are not from God
This makes discernment essential.
The Central Theme: Christ Fully Formed Within Every Follower
Everything comes back to this:
“When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come…”
This is the heart of the latter rain:
- Not just proclaiming truth
- But reflecting Christ’s character, Christ in me the hope of glory!
Practical Application for Today
Let’s bring this down to daily life.
Preparation is not complicated—but it is deeply serious. It is determining our destiny.
Daily Experience of the Early Rain
- Morning surrender
- Time in Scripture
- Prayer for the Spirit
- Walking in obedience
Ongoing Work of the Heart
- Confession when convicted
- Making wrongs right
- Letting go of pride and self
Living for Mission
- Sharing truth
- Serving others
- Being a witness in daily life
Final Picture
The latter rain is not distant—it is here.
Heaven is waiting.
Not because God is unwilling—but because His people choose not to be ready.
Final Thought
The question is not:
“When will the latter rain fall?”
But:
“Is my heart ready as it is falling?”
Closing Reflection
Imagine a people:
- Fully surrendered
- United in love
- Filled with the Spirit
- Reflecting Christ, living lives “In Christ”.
That is the condition upon which the latter rain falls.
And that invitation is open—right now.
Even so, Come Lord Jesus.
