The Biblical Signs of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ: Understanding the Two Resurrections and the Millennium

Exploring the hope of eternal life and the truth about what happens after death

Introduction: The Hope That Transcends Death

From the beginning of time, humanity has asked the same haunting question: What happens when we die?
Every culture, every religion, and every age has wrestled with it — because deep down, we know that life cannot simply end with our last breath.

The Bible offers not just answers, but hope. It tells of a time when Jesus Christ will return — not as the humble carpenter of Nazareth, but as the glorious King of Kings. His return, known as the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, will bring an end to pain, injustice, and death itself. It will separate light from darkness, life from destruction, and truth from deception.

In a world filled with war, natural disasters, moral confusion, and spiritual hunger, people sense that something great is about to happen. Could these be the signs of the Second Coming the Bible speaks about? What will happen to the dead — both those who believed in Jesus and those who did not? And what is the mysterious millennium and the two resurrections spoken of in Scripture?

This message will walk you through those biblical truths — not to instill fear, but to offer clarity, comfort, and direction. Whether you are a believer or a seeker, you’ll discover that God’s plan for humanity is both just and deeply loving.

  1. Understanding the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is the central hope of Christianity. Just as He came once to save the world through His death and resurrection, He will come again to complete that salvation and destroy evil forever.

1.1. Jesus Promised His Return

Before ascending into heaven, Jesus comforted His disciples with these words:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms… I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
John 14:1–3 (NIV)

This promise is the foundation of the Christian hope — that one day, those who love Jesus will be reunited with Him forever.

1.2. The Nature of His Coming

The Bible is very clear: the return of Christ will not be secret, symbolic, or hidden. It will be visible, audible, and world-shaking.

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16 (NIV)

“Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him.”
Revelation 1:7 (NIV)

The Second Coming will not be something you read about in the news — it will be the news. Every person alive will witness it.

  1. The Biblical Signs of the Second Coming

Before Jesus returns, He said there would be unmistakable signs — warnings and reminders that history is reaching its climax.

2.1. Signs in the World

Jesus described global chaos that would intensify before His coming:

“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars… Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.”
Matthew 24:6–7 (NIV)

Today, the world is filled with tension — wars, pandemics, economic turmoil, and natural disasters on an unprecedented scale. While these alone don’t prove that the end is here, they do fulfill what Jesus said: the world will groan in birth pains before His return (see Romans 8:22).

2.2. Moral and Spiritual Decay

“People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.”
2 Timothy 3:2–4 (NIV)

Society increasingly calls evil good and good evil. Truth is replaced by opinion, and holiness by self-centeredness. Yet amid this darkness, the light of the gospel still shines.

2.3. The Gospel to the Whole World

Jesus gave a beautiful sign that must happen before His return:

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
Matthew 24:14 (NIV)

Before Christ comes again, the message of salvation will reach every corner of the earth — an incredible sign of God’s mercy and desire that all be saved.

  1. What Happens When We Die?

To understand the resurrections and the millennium, we first need to understand what the Bible says about death.

3.1. Death Is a Sleep

Jesus often referred to death as sleep — a temporary state awaiting awakening.

“Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”
John 11:11 (NIV)

Death is not eternal consciousness; it’s an unconscious rest until the resurrection. The Bible says:

“For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing.”
Ecclesiastes 9:5 (NIV)

Every human being experiences the first death — the natural end of mortal life. But the Bible also speaks of a second death — an eternal separation from God (see Revelation 20:14–15). Between those two lies the promise of resurrection and judgment.

  1. The Two Resurrections Explained

The Bible teaches that there are two main resurrections — one for the righteous and one for the wicked — separated by a thousand-year period called the Millennium.

4.1. The First Resurrection — The Resurrection of Life

This occurs at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven… and the dead in Christ will rise first.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16 (NIV)

“Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them.”
Revelation 20:6 (NIV)

This resurrection includes all who died trusting in Jesus Christ — from the earliest believers to the most recent faithful followers. They are raised to immortal life, free from sin, pain, and death forever.

Those believers who are alive at His coming will not die but will be transformed:

“We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.”
1 Corinthians 15:51–52 (NIV)

Together, they will meet the Lord in the air and go with Him to heaven (see 1 Thessalonians 4:17).

4.2. The Second Resurrection — The Resurrection of Judgment

After the thousand years (the Millennium), another resurrection occurs:

“The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.”
Revelation 20:5 (NIV)

This resurrection is for those who rejected Christ or lived in rebellion against God. It is not a resurrection to life, but to judgment — leading to the second death.

“Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.”
Daniel 12:2 (NIV)

  1. The Millennium: A Thousand Years of Restoration and Judgment

5.1. What Happens During the Millennium?

The Millennium begins with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the first resurrection. The righteous are taken to heaven, and the wicked are destroyed by the brightness of His coming (see 2 Thessalonians 2:8).

The earth becomes desolate — a “bottomless pit” (Greek: abyssos) as described in Revelation 20:1–3 — where Satan and his fallen angels are bound, unable to deceive anyone because no living humans remain on earth.

Meanwhile, the redeemed are in heaven, participating in the judgment:

“I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge… They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”
Revelation 20:4 (NIV)

During this time, God allows His people to see His justice and mercy fully displayed — reviewing the lives of those who rejected Him and understanding His righteous judgments.

5.2. The End of the Millennium

At the end of the thousand years, the New Jerusalem descends from heaven to earth (Revelation 21:2). The wicked are resurrected (the second resurrection), and Satan once again gathers them for one last rebellion against God.

But then comes the final judgment — fire comes down from heaven and destroys sin and sinners forever.

“Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.”
Revelation 20:14 (NIV)

This marks the end of evil, death, and suffering — forever.

  1. What Happens to Those Who Die Without Knowing Jesus Christ?

This is one of the most sensitive and often misunderstood questions. The Bible reveals that God is perfectly just and loving, and no one will be lost unfairly.

“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”
Psalm 103:8 (NIV)

“He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

God judges every person based on the light and truth they received. Those who never had the chance to know Jesus personally will be judged fairly — by how they responded to the truth they did know (see Romans 2:14–16).

But those who knowingly reject God’s grace and refuse His salvation will face the second death — eternal separation from God. This is not eternal torment but eternal destruction (see 2 Thessalonians 1:9).

God’s desire is not to send anyone to hell, but to save everyone through Jesus Christ. Those who accept His gift of grace will experience eternal life, while those who reject it will face eternal death — not because God is cruel, but because He honors human choice.

  1. Life After Death: Heaven, Eternal Life, and the New Earth

After the final judgment, the Bible paints one of the most beautiful pictures imaginable:

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.”
Revelation 21:1 (NIV)

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”
Revelation 21:4 (NIV)

Those who share in the first resurrection will inherit this new creation — a restored paradise where God dwells among His people. There will be no more sin, no more fear, no more death. Just eternal joy, purpose, and peace.

This is not a fantasy — it’s God’s promise.

  1. Practical Lessons and Hope for Today

The prophecies about the Second Coming, the resurrections, and the millennium are not meant to create fear, but faith. They teach us how to live with purpose and peace in a world full of uncertainty.

8.1. Wake Up Spiritually — Don’t Sleep in Sin

The Bible warns believers and unbelievers alike not to ignore the times:

“So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.”
1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NIV)

Be alert to the signs of Christ’s return — and live each day ready to meet Him.

8.2. Choose Eternal Life Today

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (NIV)

Eternal life is not something we earn — it’s a gift offered freely through Jesus Christ. To accept it, we must repent of sin, believe in Him, and walk in His love.

8.3. Trust God’s Justice and Mercy

If you’ve lost someone who didn’t know Jesus, remember: God alone knows their heart. His justice is perfect, and His mercy is infinite. You can trust Him with the souls of those you love.

  1. The Final Victory: From Death to Life Eternal

The story of human history ends not with despair, but with victory. Death, hell, and the grave will all be defeated.

“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”
1 Corinthians 15:26 (NIV)

Through Jesus Christ, we are offered freedom from the first death, victory over the second death, and the promise of eternal life.

The Bible’s message is simple but profound:
You don’t have to fear death. You don’t have to be lost.
You can have eternal life — starting now — through Jesus Christ.

  1. Conclusion: The Invitation of Love

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is not merely a prophecy; it is a promise of love.
It tells us that this broken world will not last forever. That injustice, pain, and death will come to an end. And that every person, no matter their past, can find forgiveness and eternal hope in the Savior who died and rose again.

When Christ returns, there will only be two groups: those who rejoice at His appearing and those who mourn because they never accepted Him. The choice belongs to us — today.

“Now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”
2 Corinthians 6:2 (NIV)

Friend, you were created for eternal life, not eternal death. The same Jesus who came once to save will come again to gather His children home. When He does, will you be ready to meet Him?
